5 Essential San Diego Burgers

Updated: May 7, 2018

It's 10:00 pm. I'm sitting on my couch watching Will & Grace and a thought popped into my head: "I need a burger." This happens more often than I'm willing to admit. When I get that craving, here are the burgers I turn to.

1. Trust

Wood Grilled Burger the Trust Way

The GOAT. It's the first one on my mind when someone mentions they want a burger. I've eaten it exactly 6 times and I only discovered the burger a little over 2 months ago. It's that good. Order the Wood Grilled Burger (asiago cheese, bacon-tomato jam, pickled onions, arugula on a poppy seed bun) the Trust way (house cured-braised bacon & sunny side egg). It comes with a side of fries perfect for sopping up all the juice from the burger. I might have to get one for dinner tonight. Again. HELP.

2. Hodad's

Double Bacon Cheeseburger with Onion Rings

When my husband and I moved to San Diego, the first place we ate is Hodad's. We gawked at the line of people waiting for burgers, but we waited anyway. After two huge burgers, we completely understood the queue and have happily waited in it many times since. One of my favorite things in the entire world is to go to a Padres game, get a gigantic Stone IPA and a Hodad's Double Bacon Cheeseburger with Onion Rings (a must order) at their in-stadium location. I don't like baseball, but I love Hodad's.

3. Stuffed

If you've never had a cheese-stuffed burger, you need to get over to one of Stuffed's two locations right now. It's my favorite Sunday brunch burger stop. We head to Liberty Public Market for the afternoon to grab the BOOM (american cheese stuffed patty, topped with spicy mac n’ cheese, peppered smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickles, stuffed! sauce) and and enjoy our burger under the sun.

4. Shake Shack

Double Shack Burger

I know, I know. It's a fast food burger. But I love Shake Shack, and I don't care who knows it! (Thank you, those of you who read that in a sing-song Will Ferrel's Elf voice.) This is a burger that should absolutely not be written off as "just a fast-food burger." The patties are crisp on the outside, juicy on the inside. The ShackSauce is what dreams are made of. The soft Martin's Potato Bun is a perfect pairing. I know, I'm in love.

5. Burger Lounge

Lounge Burger

Burger Lounge is my favorite late-night burger. The Gaslamp location is open until 3:00 am and you can find me there on many Saturday nights after dancing my heart out to early 2000's hits at Vin De Syrah. Order the Lounge Burger with a side of 1/2 fries and 1/2 onion rings. It's heavenly and will definitely help keep your hangover at bay the next morning.
